Blending History with Nature: A Waterfront Redesign in Barriefield Village

A heritage-approved landscape featuring natural stone, custom carpentry, and smart elevation work along Kingston’s scenic shoreline.

Set along the tranquil shores of Barriefield Village in Kingston, this waterfront landscaping project by Shades of Green will exemplify the harmonious blend of technical precision and natural beauty. As shown in the early stages, the team began by reshaping the sloped terrain to create a more functional outdoor living space. Excavation and elevation adjustments are carried out to flatten uneven ground and introduce a new lawn area. With natural-cut flagstone set to define the main hardscaped surfaces and repurposed native limestone integrated throughout, the design respects and reflects the organic charm of the surrounding environment. Our dedicated crew in action, working with surveying tools and compact machinery to sculpt the site, all set against a stunning lakeside backdrop.

What sets this project apart is not just its setting but the thoughtful integration of heritage and environmental requirements. Situated on a protected waterfront, the project required both KCCA and Heritage Committee approvals—guidelines that influenced everything from retaining wall materials to the style and color of a pergola and fencing. A semi-sunken, raised porch constructed with Brandon tackle block and capped in natural stone will anchor the design, merging functionality with timeless aesthetics. With the inclusion of custom white fencing and a carefully designed pergola, all approved to meet strict heritage standards, this project will stand as a showcase of how beauty, compliance, and craftsmanship can coexist. Shades of Green’s expertise will be demostrated in every detail, from soil to stone, in this lakeside transformation.
